Queenstown Mixed Tenure Housing

In 2017, in response to the urgent need for affordable housing and rental accommodation in Queenstown, New Ground acquired land and approvals for the development of Toru Apartments: three apartment buildings, comprising 236 affordable and rental apartments.

The Toru Apartments purpose built rental development is located on the corner of Cherry Blossom and Copper Beech Avenues, adjacent to Remarkables Park Town Centre, a location which offers residents proximity to places of work and a wide range of amenities including public transport, shops, medical facilities, schools, trails and other recreational activities.

New Ground’s intention was to sell the 78 apartments in the first stage (East building) on the open market, and retain ownership of the 156 purpose built rental apartments in the second stage (Central and West buildings) for leasing to employers and individual households.  The second stage features ‘co-living’ facilities, designed to create a genuine sense of community, with shared lounge areas, as well as a café and bar.

Construction of the East building commenced in early 2019 and completed in December 2020. The apartments in this building have been sold to a mix of owner occupiers, investors and the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust, who purchased 50 apartments for affordable housing.
